Graduate Certificate

Students in Boat Photo The Department of Oceanography at Florida State University now offers a certificate of graduate studies in oceanography to students who wish to have an introduction to this interdisciplinary field as a presursor to graduate study leading to a degree or to enrich their background for professional work. It is not intended as a diploma or a degree. The certificate requires 15 hours of course work including the writing of a research paper and is intended to be completed in two consecutive semesters or no longer than three calendar years.

How to Apply:

Apply as a Non-Degree Seeking Student through the FSU Office of Admissions. There is a $30 application fee and you must include two official transcripts.

Courses Include:

Core Courses:

OCB 5050:
Basic Biological Oceanography (3). Introduction to the organization of benthic and planktonic communities in the ocean.

OCC 5050:
Basic Chemical Oceanography (3). The chemical composition of seawater, carbon dioxide system, nutrients, trace elements, biogeochemistry.

OCG 5051:
Basic Geological Oceanography (3). Structural and oceanographic setting of continents and ocean basins, plate tectonics, ocean margins, marine sediments, and ocean history.

OCP 5050:
Basic Physical Oceanography (3). Seawater properties, currents, waves, tides, and acoustics.

Electives:

Students will select electives from the graduate offerings in the department in consultation with their faculty advisors.

Courses that apply toward a graduate degree:

If you choose to continue with the department to earn your masters or doctoral degree and are admitted by the department, your supervisory committee will decide on a case by case basis what courses taken for the certificate can be applied to the degree requirements.
