In order to assess the quality of our climatology it is compared to other data sets. The World Ocean Database'98 (the source of the World Ocean Atlas'98) was downloaded from the NOAA Ferret site. Other data include the climatology of Gouretski and Jancke (Progress in Oceanography, 2001). For ease of processing and because the interest here is not dynamical comparison is done on isobaths.
